Sometimes I hate people. Specifically, people who abuse and neglect helpless creatures, who shouldn't be allowed to own animals. Sadly, in the horse world, there are a lot of people who qualify for my disdain. Some of you may remember me talking about the 2 race horses who had been pretty much abandoned by their owner a year or so ago; we had them at the farm for two years before they got moved. I had hoped that the owner had changed and would take responsibility for them, and for awhile it seemed he was. They are at a place up the road from the farm, in the field there. The owner of the stable there is a nice woman, but it seems he hasn't been paying her either, so she had to put them in the field to cut down on the work. I hope she's giving them extra hay too, because this time of year the grass is pretty lacking in nutrition. The other day Sue told me that she noticed that Min had her winter blanket on, but Elanna didn't. I don't know what happened to it, but I suppose it tore or something. I've been bothered by the thought of the poor horse out in the rain without a blanket, so I decided to buy her one. I found a nice one on sale today, so I picked it up. I'm going to drop it off tomorrow. If it's too big, Midnight has one a size smaller that might fit, and he could have the new one. I wish I could do more for the poor horses, but at least I can do this much. Nothing infuriates me more than people who treat animals like they're just things to be tossed aside when they're not useful anymore. If I ever come across that creep of a man, I will give him an earful...he'll be lucky if I don't give him a kick where it hurts.Grrrr. I'm not sure exactly what's happening with them, but my hope is that Tanya will let the Horse Rescue place take them. Circle F Horse Rescue is a wonderful, dedicated group of horse lovers who do good work. My lovely Kyra is a rescued horse, so I feel strongly about this sort of thing. Min and Elanna deserve better lives, so if necessary, I'll contact the SPCA about them if it looks like they're not getting cared for. I need to be able to sleep at night. Current Mood: distressed |

Interview with a Vampire
Just watched Interview with a Vampire. It is better than I remember. What I remember, seeing it 15 years ago, is being pregnant, and so so hungry, despite having had dinner not an hour or two before, and being jealous of the vampires because they could eat when ever they were so inclined. I was not bothered by the gore, and my stomach growled. Is that TMI? LOL The cinematography was really well done. It is a beautiful movie. That surprised me. The acting less so, although it seems Brad Pitt can only act "sincerely". Everything I've seen him in, he has the same sincere commitment to the act. And it shows. (Well, maybe not Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he looked as if he was having fun in that one.) He was even in the movie, but not convincing. Cruise was Cruise. I had completely forgotten Antonio Banderas was in the movie. Huh. And of course who stole the show was Kirsten Dunst who was the most believable of all. And she was only 12. I hope the others took notes. Buffy would have been proud of the cleansing of Paris by Louis. LOL |

Whoooo....new Who!
I did not know that the latest Doctor Who special had aired until I read my flist tonight. How exciting! I am now in the process of "acquiring" the episode. It's been a long time coming. Long enough that I seem to have forgotten how to type in the excitement, because my fingers are behaving like lumpy sausages and hitting all the wrong keys. LOL. I've had the day off (at least a day not working at the farm); I got up at 9 a.m., did 3 huge loads of laundry, and watched Skate America while the clothes were cleaning themselves. Then I went out into the rain to get some food..my cupboards were pretty bare. I needed to restock, big time! I think it's time for a nice cup of tea and Battle of the Blades. Better check on the good Doctor, too. ETA: Oh, Doctor. This was really heartbreakingly powerful. Can't wait to see what comes next in the Christmas special. Current Mood: determined |

Rode hard and put away wet
I was up in the City yesterday, so I headed across to Lacis. Lacis is heroin for people interested in historic needlecrafts. If you can do it with any form of string, Lacis has the string, the books, and the specialized tools, as well as salespeople who know how to use them. A saleswoman had an informed ten-minute discussion with me about the best hand needles for use in home handsewing. (We agreed on size 8 embroidery needles. I like embroidery needles because the large eyes are easy to thread. She likes them because they aren't too long and because they tend to push aside the cloth threads rather than piercing through them.) I allowed myself to go hog-wild. Tatting shuttles of bone, plastic, and silverplate (I'm trying to find a small one that doesn't fang me with its point), a silverplate metal ball for holding the thread and keeping it from tangling or being pounced on, a small wooden needlecase that I delude myself I shall decorate, a small porcelain head and hands I delude myself I shall make into a closet sachet, a book on lace as used in costume, the catalog for a lace exhibition, and a reproduction of the patent clothing square (think L-square, but with arm and bust curves) required by the Women's Institute pattern-drafting series the originals of which I own. Glee! Ti-ra-la-la-i-tu! I gloat! But that wasn't the highlight. The highlight was that Mr. Jules Kliot, co-founder of the store with his late wife Kathe, was giving tours of the Lacis bobbin lace collection. (In 2004, Lacis was re-incorporated as a textile museum; the retail store is now the museum store, and its proceeds go to support the museum.) If you're in Berkeley on a weekend, you must go. Mr. Kliot loves lace, tells the story of it with informed passion, and has an enormous collection that includes the "priceless Mechlin" you read about so much in historical novels; one piece he has, a "lappet" (lace for draping across the hair), would have taken 24 years to make. The collection room is carefully set up with hand magnifiers so that you can inspect individual pieces, as well as a microscope for examining fine detail. If you're into the technology and sociology of upper-class European clothing it's a must-visit. You can make Mr. Kliot very happy if you share his enthusiasm even a little. Then, drained, to the BART station. A man came up to me and said "If you're a lady, you must be interested in fine perfume." I said, in utter exhaustion, "PLEASE leave me alone." He sat down at the other side of the bench and grumbled, loudly, about how rude I was. I sat eyes ahead. He did warn me when I headed to the train without my patent clothing square, which is 3 feet high, but it was still a very unpleasant encounter. I need to work on my LEAVE ME ALONE glare, thus preventing such encounters. Woke up this morning determined to do one thing, replace the failing hard drive on our oldest (2002) TiVo, the one with the lifetime license. In that TiVo's life, I've added a hard drive, replaced the power supply, and upgraded the fan. Fourth time, alas, was the anti-charm; I appear to have managed to brick it. Ah, well. We'll have to re-up on a lifetime membership for another machine, and hope TiVo doesn't go bankrupt. During the TiVo frustration, I took time out to install a smart power strip in the living room; now the video games' and second DVD player's wallwarts drain power only when the TV itself is turned on. That's something. I'm batting .500 for the day, but I'll give it a solid .750 for the weekend.

I can haz Yuletide!
Sorry for the lengthy delay, my dear Yuletide writer. Busy weekend! In general, I will just be very happy to have a story to wake up to on the high holy day of the Winter Shopping Festival. It will be wonderful to see that someone else cares about my fandoms, too. I hope that you will write what you enjoy, and my details in the Yuletide signup are pretty much my main points of interest or concern. Everything else here is just the gravy -- makes something taste better and has lots of yummy fat, but it's not necessary to the enjoyment of the main items. I can be pretty sure you're not here for my fandom of one, MDs, so I won't spend too much time on that one. ( Details about my fandom requests ) |
